Lesson planning guide

American Red Cross swimming lesson plans (Levels 1–7)

The American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim program pairs swim skills with water safety at every level. A Red Cross lesson is not complete without an age-appropriate safety element. This guide summarises the levels and how to plan lessons that reflect Red Cross practice.

Water safety is part of the lesson, not an add-on

Red Cross planning expects safety messaging woven through the session: staying within designated areas, safe diving rules, recognising a lifeguard, reaching and throwing assists, HELP and huddle positions. Build it into the warm-up talk or the end-of-lesson task rather than tacking it on.

SwimWise AI uses Red Cross terminology — rotary breathing, bobbing, survival float, PFD, reaching assist — and distances in yards when you select this framework.
